“I’ll Face the Consequences”: Dem Rep. Joins Elite Group as 28th Lawmaker in History to Be Censured

The House Republicans have put forward several motions to condemn Representative Al Green (D-TX) following his interruption of President Donald Trump’s speech before Congress. Green was escorted out of the room when he voiced protests at the beginning of Trump’s remarks. Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA) presented a motion alleging that Green had violated congressional etiquette during the president’s speech.

The House of Representatives passed a vote of 224-198 to censure Green, marking him as the 28th member of Congress to receive such condemnation.

House Majority Whip (R-MN) Tom Emmer stated, “Representative Al Green’s immature display has unveiled the disarray and mismanagement within the Democratic Party following President Trump’s decisive victory last November and his effective tenure so far. It comes as no surprise that 198 Democrats did not back Representative Green’s call for censure considering their pattern of extreme and provocative statements driven by what they term ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome.'”

Green stated, “I am ready to endure whichever penalty is imposed upon me. I haven’t told anybody to refrain from punishing me; instead, I have expressed my willingness to accept the consequences.”

Green stated, “However, it’s important for everyone to understand that there are individuals who will rise up against this president’s plan to reduce funding for Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.”

Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) voiced his support for the measure, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable. Following Green’s disruption of Trump by yelling, “You have no mandate!”, he was instructed to leave.

Johnson stated, “Even though I cautioned him multiple times, he persisted with his disruptive behavior and I had to evict him from the room. His actions contravened the established House regulations, thus a swift vote of condemnation would be a fitting course of action.”

Johnson stated, “Every Democrat eager to restore the confidence and esteem of Americans ought to team up with House Republicans in this initiative.”

Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX) has similarly prepared an alternative resolution, which has garnered more than 30 Republican supporters. In response to Greene’s ousting, Democrats voiced their dissent by chanting “We Shall Overcome” on the House floor.
