Just like with
the Tasman pickup
, Kia is going for bold with its
new PV5 electric van
, whose production design has just been revealed. It stays true to the PV5 concept revealed at CES last year and keeps the unusual face with high LED daytime running light slivers and lower, more inset headlights.
Kia still hasn’t released the full specs for either version of the PV5, but it will likely reveal more at the model’s global premiere next week. The production PV5 will make its public debut at the second-ever Kia EV Day held in Tarragona, Spain next Thursday.
There are also no photos of the production PV5’s interior, which will likely differ more from the concept than the exterior.
According to Karim Habib, Head of Kia Global Design, “While the PV5 is offered in three different body styles to provide innovative solutions for a diverse range of customer needs, they all embody the same consistent design values. Each model confidently expresses a solid, bold, futuristic character and a highly capable attitude.”
The PV5 is built on the Electric Complete Chassis Platform Module (e-CCPM) shared with Hyundai, which supports single- and dual-motor configurations.
Bidirectional charging
could also be included in the package, but the manufacturer hasn’t confirmed it yet. Additional body styles are reportedly planned, possibly with more than one wheelbase length, and we don’t see why Kia couldn’t make a pickup variant of the PV5 down the line.
More off-road-oriented versions could also be in the cards. One of the concepts that previewed the production PV5,
the PV5 WKNDR
, featured lifted suspension, chunky all-terrain tires and a camper van interior targeting outdoorsy types. Kia could launch a dedicated camper version with unique features and a bespoke interior in the style of the concept to rival
the future Volkswagen ID Buzz California
or
a similar vehicle from Mercedes-Benz
.
Kia previously announced that the PV5 will have a starting price in Europe of around €35,000 (about $36,500 at current exchange rates). There are also plans for a tiny PV1 urban delivery vehicle and a larger PV7 van, which are all part of the
Kia’s PBV Van Series
, describing it as a “complete mobility solution that integrates specialized electric vehicles with cutting-edge software solutions.”
The company has not formally announced whether it plans to distribute the PV5 in the United States; however, a test model was seen stateside, sparking rumors of an eventual release. Should this occur, the device would debut in America following its introduction in South Korea and Europe.
