The
New England Patriots
started the week off hectic, despite free agency not beginning formally till Wednesday. Nonetheless, they failed to secure various crucial players, such as
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
wide receiver Chris Godwin.
However, it wasn’t because they didn’t make an effort.
According to
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport
, the Patriots showed strong interest in Godwin and are actively seeking improvements at the wide receiver spot to complement their young franchise quarterback, Drake Maye.
Godwin eventually opted to go back to Tampa Bay with a three-year, $66 million contract. Clearly, this was his preferred choice as he supposedly turned down $20 million elsewhere.
A lot of players have taken smaller contracts just to remain with their teams. From what I understand, Chris Godwin turned down approximately $20 million to leave his current team,” Rapoport stated on “The Pat McAfee Show.
After recovering from a season-ending ankle injury, Godwin, who was 29 years old, could have provided an improvement over the current options available to the Patriots. In the 2024 season, he managed 50 receptions for 576 receiving yards and scored five touchdowns across just seven games.
Now, the Patriots must shift their focus to the remaining choices in free agency. They could also consider bolstering their receiving corps by selecting a player in the 2025 NFL Draft.
They have to go to great lengths to enhance the attacking options for Maye.
